The dainty Arctic fox is common almost all over Svalbard. Its diet consists of seabirds, eggs and carrion. It tends to tag along behind the polar bear helping itself to the leftovers of the bear’s haul. In spring, seal pups are an important source of nourishment. It catches and kills them on the ice in the fjords. The Arctic fox can cover large distances looking for food, and it roams way out onto the ice floes. A fox that had been labelled in Svalbard was found as far away as in Novaja Zemlja, in Russia. Sometimes when Doggie isn’t paying attention Spooky, The arctic Fox, will come and steal her food. Last night Spooky was hanging out in the kitchen and Doggie was sleeping in the bed room with Sara so it have him a perfect chance to eat her food. Spooky normally eats a mixture of dry food with wet food as well as fruits and vegetables and 60mg of phenobarbital with each meal to control his seizures. This was his first meal in a while he got to eat without his medication. I figured It was more like a treat for him. He also eats raw meat at times and every once in a while we feed him life foods as well. Spooky is a blue phase arctic fox and I’ve had him for 5 years.
